The Visitor Services volunteer team, from Dundee Museum of Transport, are one of the three finalists in this year’s Volunteer Team of the Year category.

Members of the Visitor Services volunteer team work tirelessly 249 days a year, contributing around 5,000 volunteer hours to ensure that the museum opens its doors and that visitors receive the warmest welcome possible. They are a diverse team of 19 volunteers who work collectively to carry out different duties, ranging from being the first point of contact for visitors, guiding visitors, maintaining café facilities and cleaning the exhibits.

The team have made a difference to the organisation in many ways – for example, they put in a lot of work behind the scenes, by learning about the displays to ensure that their knowledge is informative and entertaining. They also often come in outside of their normal schedule and support the set-up of events. Some events have brought over 500 visitors in one day and it is down to the team that a fantastic experience is provided!

Finally, they give back to the community in many ways, through sharing their knowledge with visitors and new volunteers, promoting and caring for Dundee’s rich heritage and working closely with community groups. All of this has led to an increase in visitor numbers and the museum being one of the top things to do in Dundee!

Good luck to Dundee Museum of Transport at the Volunteer Awards!
