Frequently Asked Questions - Sport
What can I do?
The most popular activity is usually coaching, however you can get involved in a wide variety of ways depending on your skills and interests. There are also opportunities to assist at sessions, organise events, fundraise, transport teams, or get involved in the committee of a local club.
Do I need to be fit & fantastic at a sport?
No you simply need interest and enthusiasm! A lot of people find that volunteering in sport is a great way to develop non-sport specific skills (e.g. supervision of children, event organisation, or webpage design). There is always an opportunity to suit your activity and ability level.
Do I need coaching qualifications?
Not usually. The sports organisation may help you to gain appropriate qualifications for you role. If the organisation cannot help with funding there are many options for assistance. You may also get the opportunity to do other relevant courses, such as first aid training.
How much time do I need to have?
Most people volunteer on average 2-3 hours a week but there are also opportunities to volunteer more or less frequently. Volunteering can be flexible to suit your schedule.
Do I need a disclosure (police) check?
A disclosure check is a way of checking that you do not have a criminal conviction that would affect your voluntary role. If you are working with children or vulnerable adults, the organisation you volunteer with must check that you are not on the Disqualified from Working with Children List. The only way to do this is for them to arrange a disclosure check. This is a simple process and the organisation will be able to guide you through the application form.
What about travel and childcare costs?
Many organisations will cover travel expenses to allow you to volunteer. You may also qualify for funding to cover childcare costs while you volunteer or travel expenses, where these are not covered by the organisation. Please check with the Volunteer Centre about eligibility for such funding.
Will volunteering affect my benefits?
No, but it is important that you tell your Job Centre Plus advisor so that they can take account of the volunteer work. You will still need to be available for interviews and so you should make any organisation you volunteer with aware of your situation.
