By Your Side – A Peer-to-Peer Cancer Support Service

Would you like to speak to someone who has walked in your shoes?

By Your Side is a peer support service that complements the breadth of services available to those affected by cancer in Dundee, offering a short term opportunity for you to speak to someone who has experienced cancer themselves. This service has been designed by a group of people affected by cancer in Dundee,
the ICJ Cancer Voices, and is a Macmillan Cancer Support and Volunteer Dundee
partnership project.

What is peer support?

Cancer can be isolating. Peer support is a connection with someone who understands what you are going through because they have been there themselves.

How can we help?

Our volunteers are ready to listen, and willing to help you to find the strength you need by sharing their experience, being honest about the emotional challenges of cancer, and suggesting practical tips.  After we match you with one of our volunteers, they will be in touch to arrange a few meet-ups at a time and in a location that is convenient for both of you. These meet-ups are led by you and your needs.  What would you like to talk about? What questions have you been unable to ask? How are you really feeling?

What happens next?

After three or four meet-ups, we will have a conversation with you about how you would like to proceed.  Dundee has a huge range of support services including drop-in information, a tailored practical support service, longer-term befriending and gentle exercise classes. If you would like, your volunteer can support on your first step to access any of these.
