Barnardo’s strives to help the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children. Barnardo’s vision today is that the lives of all children and young people should be free from poverty, abuse and discrimination. We want to bring out the best in every child no matter who they are or what they have been through. We deal with various issues such as poverty, neglect, homelessness, bereavement, domestic violence and disability. We look at the bigger picture and strive for a better future for all children and young people.

Action for Children supports disadvantaged children, young people and families across various services in the UK. Action for Children intervenes to stop neglect and abuse and also offer services to support children, young people and families with disabilities. AFC want to help support children, young people and families to fulfil their potential and make the most of their lives.

We are looking for volunteers (16+) to help support our School Holiday Activity Days which run over school holidays, daily between 9am-3pm, Monday-Friday. Volunteers will be in a group setting alongside other staff and volunteers for the day and their main role will be to help support a child/young person with the activities that are planned for the day. Activities can include arts and crafts, soft play, swimming, going to local parks, the cinema and accessing other local resources in the community.

The Sitting Service looks for 2 volunteers (18+) to go into the family home (once a month to every second month) for one evening (Friday or Saturday) for a few hours over 6 months to 1 year. During the sit the volunteers will usually play games, do arts and crafts and watch some TV. Activities will vary depending on the age of children that the volunteers are supporting.

We are looking for Befrienders/Mentors (18+) to help support children and young people (ages can go up to 25) with practical skills and taking them to activities in the local community. We also look for befrienders/mentors to support young people in their accommodation with activities such as gardening, DIY and cooking. We look for volunteers who are free during the day, after school, early evenings and weekends to provide a couple of hours each week for around 6 months-1 year. Befrienders can help children and young people to build up confidence, improve peer relationships and help by providing time to be there and listen.

There are opportunities to help support children and young people with Group Work which also includes some work with the parents/carers and siblings. These roles can take place during the day and usually after school. Groups can be ongoing (weekly) or can take place for 7-8 weeks at a time which will also be weekly, for a couple of hours at a time.

*Please note that training sessions will be delivered in August and October 2018
