Have you had a personal experience of breast cancer? Are you available on Thursdays? Breast Cancer Care are recruiting volunteers in the Dundee area to support their Moving Forward courses for those living with and beyond breast cancer – helping them approach life after treatment with increased confidence. Courses take place over 4 consecutive Thursdays.
This would involve setting up and clearing away at the beginning and end of the event, meeting and greeting participants, helping with refreshments, talking briefly about your role as Breast Cancer Care volunteer/or Breast Cancer Care services, talking briefly about your personal experience of breast cancer, talking to participants during breaks, offering support to participants if they becomes upset or need to leave the room, signposting to other Breast Cancer Care services and taking part in a debriefing session.
To become a Moving Forward volunteer you need to have had a personal diagnosis of primary breast cancer and be at least one year post diagnosis. You should be confident and a skilled communicator, a good listener and both non-judgemental and non-directive. You should understand the importance of confidentiality. You may have knowledge of local breast cancer support networks which could be of added benefit to the participants at the events.
Volunteers new to the charity will need to attend a Welcome Workshop (1 day) and all volunteers will need to attend advanced role specific training. The Regional Services team will be responsible for managing and supporting you on a day to day basis.
Travel expenses are reimbursed.
